The Greek Oral History Association will hold its 6th International Conference between 8 and 10 November 2024 in Volos, Greece. The conference’s theme is “Resistances and Contestations. New Perspectives in Oral History”. Participants will reflect on how oral memory and biographical narratives may challenge hegemonic master narratives or reveal new forms of agency, on how embodied and affective experiences are transformed into narration and on the kind of resistances we may face in our own work as oral historians. The conference is co-organized with the Department of History, Archeology and Social Anthropology of the University of Thessaly and with the RC38 Biography and Society of the International Sociological Association. Our keynote speaker is Alessandro Portelli who will speak on “War, Violence and the Ethics of Resistance” (Friday 8 November 19.30 p.m.). On Saturday 9 November 19.30 p.m. we will host a roundtable discussion on the relation between oral history and the biographical approach between prof. Gabriele Rosenthal and Lindsey Dodd. Both events are in English and can be attended remotely through the links mentioned in the conference program.
On Thursday 7 November, the Greek Oral History Association will host the book launch of Portelli’s new book “From Red to Black. The turn to the right of a working-class town”, which has just been translated into Greek.
