Library (formerly the Regional Oral History Office) at the University of California, Berkeley is offering a one-week advanced institute on the<strong>methodology, theory, and practice of oral history<\/strong>. This will take place on the UC Berkeley campus in Sutardja Dai Hall from\u00a0<strong>August 10-14, 2015<\/strong>.<\/div>\n<div>The Institute is\u00a0<strong>designed for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, university faculty, independent scholars, and museum and community-based historians who are engaged in oral history work<\/strong>. The goal of the institute is to strengthen the ability of its participants to conduct research-focused interviews and to consider special characteristics of interviews as historical evidence in a rigorous academic environment.<\/div>\n<div>We will devote particular attention to how oral history interviews can broaden and deepen historical interpretation situated within contemporary discussions of history, subjectivity, memory, and memoir.<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div><em><strong>Overview of the Week<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nThe Institute is structured around the\u00a0<strong>life cycle of an interview<\/strong>. Each day will focus on a component of the interview, including foundational aspects of oral history, project conceptualization, the interview itself, analytic and interpretive strategies, and research presentation and dissemination.<\/div>\n<div>Sessions will include oral history theory, legal and ethical issues, project planning, oral history and the audience, anatomy of an interview, digital humanities, editing, fundraising, and analysis and presentation. Participants will also work throughout the week in small groups led by faculty in which they will\u00a0<strong>have the opportunity to workshop their projects<\/strong>.<\/div>\n<div><b>Our keynote this year is Amy Evans. Amy is the former Oral History Lead of the Southern Foodways Alliance.<\/b>\u00a0Evans\u00a0is an artist, writer, teacher, and independent documentarian based in Houston, Texas. She built the documentary program at the Southern Foodways Alliance, headquartered at the University of Mississippi, where she served as their lead oral historian for more than ten years and taught an annual documentary workshop. The Mississippi Historical Society has twice recognized Amy\u2019s work, and\u00a0<i>Food &amp; Wine<\/i>\u00a0magazine named her\u00a0one of the \u201cmost fearsome talents\u201d in the culinary world.\u00a0Her writing has appeared in\u00a0<i>Saveur<\/i>,\u00a0<i>The Bitter Southerner<\/i>, and\u00a0<i>Cornbread Nation 5: The Best of Southern Food Writing<\/i>. Her paintings have appeared in<i>Southern Living<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Southern Cultures,\u00a0<\/i>and on CNN\u2019s<i>\u00a0<\/i><i>Eatocracy\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0<i>The Oxford American<\/i>\u00a0blog.\u00a0Amy\u00a0holds an MA in Southern Studies from the University of Mississippi and a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She appreciates a good meringue and can never eat too many oysters.<\/div>\n<div>Prior to the week participants will be provided with a reader, the schedule, contact information for fellow participants, and word templates used by OHC at different stages throughout the interview process. These resources will be made available electronically prior to the week and in hard copy upon check-in on the first day.<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div><em><strong>Applications and Cost<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nThe Institute is limited to\u00a0<strong>40 participants<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>applications will be accepted until May 1, 2015<\/strong>. Acceptances will be made on a rolling basis. In previous years, we have reached capacity as early as the end of March, so urge you to apply as soon as possible.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/a\/berkeley.edu\/spreadsheet\/viewform?formkey=dGFjNFBlQ1JEamx1bUNmeVkzYmVQeUE6MA#gid=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Submit your application here<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><strong>The cost of the institute is $950.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Unfortunately, we are unable to provide financial assistance to participants.<\/strong>\u00a0OHC is a soft money research office of the university, and as such receives precious little state funding. Therefore, it is necessary that this educational initiative be a self-funding program.\u00a0<strong>We encourage you to check in with your home institutions about financial assistance<\/strong>; in the past we have found that many programs have budgets to help underwrite some of the cost associated with attendance. We will provide receipts and certificates of completion as required for reimbursement.<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div><em><strong>Meals and Accommodations<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nMost meals must be arranged separately and on-campus housing may be arranged through OHC.
